    Distributive education is an instructional program that is designed to prepare people for careers in the distributive or marketing sector of the economy. Crawford and Meyer give a generally accepted definition of distributive education as: ... a vocational instructional program designed to meet the needs of persons who have entered or are preparing to enter a distributive occupation or an occupation requiring competency in one or more of the marketing functions. It offers instructions in marketing, merchandising, related management, and personal development (Crawford and Meyer, 1972, p.2) Educators in the distributive education field traditionally have agreed that the curriculum should include instruction in the following areas: social competency (human relations and consumer behavior), marketing competency, basic competency (communication and mathematics), product and service technology , and an understanding of the free enterprise system. These educators have also expressed the belief that basic economic and marketing concepts form the foundation for the distributive education curriculum (Crawford and Meyer, 1972, p. 39). The distributive education program is designed to place emphasis on the individual student and the career objectives of the student. The student is a person who needs and wants assistance in adjusting to the world of work and acquiring occupational training. Meyer, Crawford, and Klaurens emphasize the following: When their career interests crystallize and their need to be employed becomes imminent, the career education curriculum provides opportunities to develop skills and knowledges that may be associated with specific occupations or occupational fields.)     Academic Success and Christian Affiliation in College

    The goal of our study was to provide a more thorough understanding of the relationship between religious attitudes and academic success, and will provide direction for future research in this domain. Our research examined the relationship between Christianity, academic achievement, and mediating variables in college-aged students. Past studies regarding religion and academic success have found that in some communities, academic success is positively correlated with religious involvement. However, these studies primarily looked at academic success in relation to involvement in a religious community, and not to personal attitudes regarding religion. To gain a better understanding of the role of personal religious attitudes in academic success, this study specifically examined academic success in relation to Christian affiliation and spirituality, as well as intrinsic dispositions of positivity and mastery. These mediating variables were included to control for factors that may relate to both academic success and religiosity, providing a more complete view of the relationship between religious attitudes and academic success. Study participants included college students currently attending a small, public, liberal-arts university. The study utilized a descriptive research design in which participants self-reported details about their demographics, academic performance (i.e. GPA and participation in honors programming), religious beliefs, and personality characteristics associated with outlook and hopefulness.     Cracks Cleave Crystals

    The problem of finding what direction cracks should move is not completely solved. A commonly accepted way to predict crack directions is by computing the density of elastic potential energy stored well away from the crack tip, and finding a direction of crack motion to maximize the consumption of this energy. I provide here a specific case where this rule fails. The example is of a crack in a crystal. It fractures along a crystal plane, rather than in the direction normally predicted to release the most energy. Thus, a correct equation of motion for brittle cracks must take into account both energy flows that are described in conventional continuum theories and details of the environment near the tip that are not.Comment: 6 page

    Effective task assignment strategies for distributed systems under highly variable workloads

    Heavy-tailed workload distributions are commonly experienced in many areas of distributed computing. Such workloads are highly variable, where a small number of very large tasks make up a large proportion of the workload, making the load very hard to distribute effectively. Traditional task assignment policies are ineffective under these conditions as they were formulated based on the assumption of an exponentially distributed workload. Size-based task assignment policies have been proposed to handle heavy-tailed workloads, but their applications are limited by their static nature and assumption of prior knowledge of a task's service requirement. This thesis analyses existing approaches to load distribution under heavy-tailed workloads, and presents a new generalised task assignment policy that significantly improves performance for many distributed applications, by intelligently addressing the negative effects on performance that highly variable workloads cause. Many problems associated with the modelling and optimisations of systems under highly variable workloads were then addressed by a novel technique that approximated these workloads with simpler mathematical representations, without losing any of their pertinent original properties. Finally, we obtain advance queuing metrics (such as the variance of key measurements like waiting time and slowdown that are difficult to obtain analytically) through rigorous simulation

    Frictional sliding without geometrical reflection symmetry

    The dynamics of frictional interfaces play an important role in many physical systems spanning a broad range of scales. It is well-known that frictional interfaces separating two dissimilar materials couple interfacial slip and normal stress variations, a coupling that has major implications on their stability, failure mechanism and rupture directionality. In contrast, interfaces separating identical materials are traditionally assumed not to feature such a coupling due to symmetry considerations. We show, combining theory and experiments, that interfaces which separate bodies made of macroscopically identical materials, but lack geometrical reflection symmetry, generically feature such a coupling. We discuss two applications of this novel feature. First, we show that it accounts for a distinct, and previously unexplained, experimentally observed weakening effect in frictional cracks. Second, we demonstrate that it can destabilize frictional sliding which is otherwise stable.     Comparison of Contact Kinematics in Posterior-Stabilized and Cruciate-Retaining Total Knee Arthroplasty at Long-Term Follow-Up

    © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Background: There is controversy regarding the superiority of posterior-stabilizing (PS) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and cruciate-retaining (CR) TKA. Substantial work has made comparisons between PS and CR TKA at follow-ups of less than 5 years. It was the goal of the present study to compare the kinematics at greater than 5 years postoperatively between CR and PS TKA, with a secondary goal of comparing patient function. Methods: A total of 42 knees were investigated, with equal representation in the PS and CR TKA groups. Patients underwent radiostereometric analysis imaging at 0°, 20°, 40°, 60° 80°, and 100° of flexion. Contact position, magnitude of excursion, and condylar separation on each condyle were measured. A Timed-Up-and-Go functional test was also performed by patients, with the total test time being measured. Preoperative and postoperative clinical outcome scores were also collected. Results: There were differences in contact position on both the medial and lateral condyles at multiple angles of flexion (P \u3c .05). There was no difference (P = .89) in medial excursion; however, PS TKA had greater lateral excursion than CR TKA (P \u3c .01). No difference (P \u3e .99) was found in frequency of condylar separation. PS TKA was associated with faster (P = .03) total Timed-Up-and-Go test times. There were no differences in clinical outcome scores between the groups preoperatively or postoperatively. Conclusion: We found kinematic and functional differences that favor PS TKA. Our results suggest posterior cruciate ligament insufficiency in CR TKA, indicating that perhaps the cam/post systems in PS TKA better maintain knee kinematics and function long term

The majority of the A(H3N2) viruses characterised antigenically and/or genetically differ from the northern hemisphere vaccine component which may result in reduced vaccine effectiveness for the season. We therefore anticipate that this season may be more severe than the 2013/14 season. Treating influenza with antivirals in addition to prevention with vaccination will be important
